A Day in the Life of ... Lauren Wright

FDM Lauren
Lauren Wright – Test Analyst

I graduated from university with a 2:1 in Multimedia Internet Technology in June 2011, and joined FDM the following September. I completed four weeks of foundation training focusing on Unix, SQL and professional skills. After this, FDM trained me in various areas of software testing, including methodologies, manual and automated testing and enabled me to gain the Foundation Qualification in ISEB.

All of this training proved to be invaluable once I went out on site. In February 2012, I began my first placement with Wincor Nixdorf, based in Bradford. To begin with, I was running manual scripts across different systems to familiarise myself with the projects and the client. I soon began working on a large integrated project that also involved other companies and have been doing so ever since. Initially, I had to familiarise myself with all of the documentation for the project and then write scripts based on these before the code was delivered. The project eventually went live in November 2013 with the sixth code base, however our testing has continued with a seventh cycle, which is due to go live across the whole estate in a phased rollout from March 2014.

During my time on the project I have also branched out into defect management and mentorship. My current day to day role invloves managing and retesting defects as well as potential production fixes, amending scripts, running scripts, and generally helping anyone on the team with queries.

I am now in my third year with FDM, and have been offered a permanent position with Wincor Nixdorf. Wincor has also given me two of their company ‘Above & Beyond Awards’ in the Customer Satisfaction area. Without FDM there is no way I would have ever been considered for a position like this. For anyone wanting to start a career in Software Testing, I would definitely recommend FDM’s Graduate IT Programme.
