How did you get your job at Aon Hewitt?
In my penultimate year at university I was offered a summer internship at Aon Hewitt. This 9 week programme was an exciting opportunity to get a taste of the actuarial role, business environment and an idea of your strengths and weaknesses in the workplace. Although it was essentially a 9 week interview process for a graduate role, it did not feel that way and everyone in the team gave the interns ample opportunity to experience the role and show their abilities. Thankfully, following my internship I was offered a place on the graduate scheme starting the following September.
Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to get into the industry?
In preparation for my internship applications and interviews I carried out extensive research on the internet to get an idea of what the job involved. However, nothing was as valuable as actually experiencing the role itself. I would recommend trying to get some experience, whether it’s a day in the office or a full internship, to get a true idea of what the role entails. In addition, talking to people who work in the industry is invaluable, and certainly worthwhile before an interview to give you a better insight of the work involved.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I find that most people who work in my department are very like-minded, and the environment in the office makes work that much more enjoyable. In terms of the actual work, I really enjoy being part of client teams and getting to know the client’s background in great depth to offer them better work. Finally, my job offers a huge variety of work meaning no two days have been the same, and there have been many exciting opportunities already in the 18 months since I started working at Aon Hewitt.
