Imperial College London

Imperial College London

Oxford has appointed its first female vice-chancellor in more than 900 years of existence. Professor Louise Richardson, a leading scholar on global terrorism, will arrive in January from the University of St Andrews, where she has been principal since 2009.

She will take over a university that ranks sixth in the world, according to the QS and Times Higher Education global rankings. However, it has slipped off the top of our table this year – having been joint first with Cambridge last year – after dropping a place to third in the new research ratings, largely because it entered a smaller proportion of its academics than its main rivals.
