Sussex is among the top three universities in the southeast for spending on widening participation, the radical traditions of its 1960s heritage still evident in its recruitment policies more than 50 years on.
Its First Generation Scholars scheme will attract £8.2m of funding in 2016-17 with more than a third of the income generated from £9,000 a year tuition fees ploughed into assisting students from lower income backgrounds who come to Sussex.
