Student radio talent celebrated at the Student Radio Awards 2008

Talented students working at campus radio stations across the country have been celebrated at this year’s Student Radio Awards. The SRAs have been responsible for launching the careers of many young voices in radio today including Marsha Shandur (XFM London, Saturday Breakfast and Sunday Roast), Greg James (BBC Radio 1, Early Breakfast Show) and Philippa TJ (BBC 6 Music, Chart Show), and another crop of youngsters have been handed gongs for their work over the past 12 months.

Radio 1 DJs Scott Mills and Fearne Cotton hosted this year’s awards chaired by Huw Stephens at Indigo2 in London. There was a record number for entries, and the top individual winners were Kate Cooper-Owen (Best Female, LSR FM), Mark Crossley (Best Male, Fly FM), Rob Watts (Best Interview, Greg Dyke on URY) and Dan Roberts (Best Newcomer, Smoke Radio).

Best Student Station went to University of Nottingham’s URN.Entries were scrutinised by some of the most successful and influential voices, producers, agents and programme controllers in the radio industry who decided which students showed the skills to reach the top in radio.

This year also saw the launch of two brand new categories. The first, 'The Kevin Greening Award' in tribute to the former Radio 1 broadcaster, is dedicated to recognising unique on air creativity. The Technical Difficulties at the University of York’s URY were the winners. The second, 'The Student Chart Show Award' follows the successful trial of the nationally syndicated Student Chart Show this award aims to highlight the station that produced the finest show of them all. Cambridge University & Anglia Ruskin University’s CUR1350 took the prize.

SRA Events Officer Kate Pringle was delighted with an event that handed out 14 trophies and saw electro pop artist Esser perform. She added: "Scott and Fearne were brilliant and we couldn't have asked for a better chair in Huw Stephens. Thank you to everyone who came down and made it such a magical night, and of course congratulations to the winners!"

Mark Farrington the Chair of the SRA said: "The student radio awards this year proved to be a massive success for all involved. After a record number of entrants across all categories, the final winners were truly the best of the student radio world. Several influential judges commented through the evening on the high standards of entertainment and professionalism throughout the entries."

The indigO2 proved to be a fantastic venue for the event - a massive thanks is due to their staff - and everyone else involved in running the event.
