• What attracted you to GL Noble Denton?
Having done a placement year with GL Noble Denton I had the advantage of having a good understanding of the interesting work that GL is involved with and the excellent working environment in the office.

• What is your academic background?
I did a degree in Materials Engineering at Loughborough University including my placement year with GL Noble Denton. I am now employed as a Materials Engineer utilising the knowledge I gained about materials and the key skills I learnt during my studies such as: team work, presentations and time management.

• Describe your typical day?
What’s a typical day?! Life in the Materials and Corrosion team is very varied, one day I might be in the lab examining samples another in the office writing reports another out on site inspecting assets and interacting face to face with clients. Variety is one of the most challenging and exciting parts of my job, challenging as you have to be able to balance your work ensuring you meet deadlines whilst exciting in that you get to see and experience a range of things you would get to otherwise.

• What is the most exciting/challenging project you have worked on?
I have very recently spent a week on a customer’s site project managing a team of subcontracted NDT inspectors. During the week the subcontracted company wasn’t able to provide an inspector with a specific qualification. It was my job to liaise with the client and the managers of the subcontract company to ensure that the job was completed on time to enable the site to ‘gas up’ at the end of the week. It was a busy stressful week but through negotiation and some thinking out of the box I was able to find a solution to enable the client to ‘gas up’ on the intended day.

• Strangest experience so far while working for GL Noble Denton?
Laying in a section of a failed pipeline with a senior colleague whilst carrying out an MPI inspection

• How quickly did you settle into your role?
Everyone in the office is very friendly and welcoming; it took no time at all to feel like part of the furniture.

• What does the future hold for you at GL Noble Denton?
GL Noble Denton is very supportive of continued professional development; since joining the company I have completed a wide range of course outside of the graduate scheme. In particular GL paid for me to undergo training to become an API 510 Pressure Vessel Inspector; in August this year I got confirmation that I had passed becoming the UK’s youngest API510 Inspector. I am looking forward to developing more in the area of inspection and combining my knowledge of materials and corrosion with this new area.

• What are the best three things about working at GL Noble Denton?
1. The interest, training and time invested in you by your senior colleagues
2. The variety and different types of work
3. The atmosphere of working in an environment full of technical experts striving to be the best at all they do and providing the best possible product for our clients

• One day I want to……?
Be in a position where I am able to help the development of new graduates by sharing my experiences in the oil and gas industry helping them to have a long and enjoyable career in oil and gas.
