"Diversity and inclusion represent the happy convergence of business sense and ethics.  If we develop our approach to diversity successfully, then we have the greatest opportunity of doing the best we can for our employees, our clients and the business."

Charlie Geffen - senior partner

Our approach

Ashurst is committed to providing equality of opportunity for all.  We recruit, develop and promote on merit, and work hard to maintain an open, inclusive and supportive working environment.

Diversity and inclusion fall within the remit of the Ashurst Committee, created to initiate and oversee improvements in the working environment for all and acting to promote inclusiveness and high performance.  The Committee is chaired by the firm's senior partner and ensures that diversity considerations are taken into account at strategic and senior levels.   The firm's Diversity Committee and Diversity and Inclusion manager have responsibility for day to day implementation of the firm's diversity strategy and objectives.

In both its legal and business services recruitment, Ashurst is increasingly focussed on the need to recruit from the widest range of appropriate sources.  To this end, it supports a number of initiatives which enable the firm to raise awareness among, and seek talent from, under-represented groups.

Internally the firm supports active Women's and LGBT networks and regularly holds events to raise awareness of different aspects of our diverse community - we celebrate International Women's Day, Black History Month and held our first Diversity Week in 2011.  A series of awareness raising events to educate all about major religious festivals and practices has been launched, while for many years every member of the firm has attended 'Working Without Prejudice', the firm's in-house diversity awareness training programme. The firm has recently set aspirational targets to help increase the proportion of women in our senior leadership roles.
