When I graduated from university I had to move 100 miles away from my university city(not my home town) to get my first graduate job. I really like my university town and still travel back to near there most weekends by train to do my hobby.
I enjoy my job and receive training, but they’re a few career prospects with it being a small firm. I don’t like the city I live in and have never felt at home here.
I have there for six months and am thinking of staying a year and then starting looking for a job and moving back to the city I went to university in.
How long should I stay at the job? Any other advice?

You can never dictate how long you should stay in a job for. I always say that to stay 18months in your frist job after being a graduate is expected.
I do understand the effect of moving 100 miles away where you spent university but are there not opportunities to do the same hobby in that town? Career prospects do not need to be on your radar at this point. Sadly it's the acclimatisation period after graduating that should be focused on so moving away from that psychology of being a student to being a professional.
You're being given training and enjoy your job. This is probably one of the most important things about your CV that you should bare in mind. We are still in a recession and jumping after 6 months could hurt. And to me, from an ex-recruitment consultant's perspective, by going up most weekends to your university town, it says that you're not making the effort to integrate into the city.
Give it some more time and it should sort itself out
