At work today they called a group of us into a side room. The inevitable happened, we were told that due to the current climate they did not have enough work to substantiate keeping all of us on. They wanted to know if any of us were willing to take voluntary redundancy. Has anyone been in a similar position? I enjoy my job, but have kind of got as far as I can with it. Should I take redundancy as a kick up the bum to move on to something new?

if you enjoy your job, stay there for a bit longer and maybe start looking at other opportunities, as the job market is in poor shape right now and you can't risk having nothing to move on to. there is nothing special about voluntary redundancy except that it means you choose to leave, rather than your employer having to make the choice. if you refuse voluntary redundancy and your employer decides to make you redundant after all, you would be in the same position had you accepted voluntary redunancy - but at least you will know whether your employer values you or not, and if they want you to stay, you get to keep yourself secure for a while longer.

I fully agree with Kathy. If there is no pressure to leave the job and they have only given you an option, then stay put and don't speak up. It sounds as if you currently don't have an alternative path for certain and everyone sadly needs an income for survival. Stay your ground, but use the threat as your drive. Hope it all works out for you :)
