I really want to leave my job as I can't stand it. I've been working here for over a year and a half and it's grown turgid and very frustrating at times. But because of the current economic climate, I feel as if I should stay as I won't be able to find anything else. Even the prospect of job hunting has me wound up! Does anyone have any advice as to what I should do in my situation?

Unless you want to go travelling or use the time productively in some way, perhaps even volunteering in this country, i'd have to say you should stay!
I can really sympathise with your situation, but it's always better to be in a job and looking for another one that being unemployed and seeking work. Firstly it puts alot more pressure on you before each interview, secondly employers don't like gaps in CV's and thirdly as you know it could take a long time to find work!!
So just apply to any jobs that interest you while you're in work, because you need to make sure that your next job is one you want to stay in and perhaps the beginning of the career rather than being a sideways move!
