That's a well-known saying, but do you think it rings true? Do you think that who you know can actually be more important than your qualifications? I once asked somebody who worked for a certain company to pass on my details and see if I could get any work experience with them, but they never heard anything back. So I guess in my case it didn't work!

It depends on the situation and depends on the person you know. If you have a good friend or relative who tells his company how great you will be at the job (the job is one that is suitable for you) then you are  more likely to get the job then other people who apply. I know plenty of people who got jobs because they have a friend in the company. I got 2 jobs because of contacts. In some cases who you know is more important than your qualifications.

My brother got a job through a friend of the family. Before that, he was really struggling to find anything. Never underestimate the importance of contacts in today's job market.
