CORDA Graduate Development Programme
CORDA is BAE Systems’ Operational Research consultancy. We have 30 years of experience of providing modelling, analysis and consultancy to support complex decisions across Defence and UK Government. CORDA is currently growing rapidly to satisfy increasing demand for its services, both from within BAE Systems and from the external market. Each year we take 4-5 graduates onto our development programme where you will work as part of our consultancy team.
At CORDA we are looking for assertive, dynamic and enthusiastic individuals who are motivated, proactive and interested in providing decision support consultancy. We are looking for applicants with the ability and desire to make a difference.
As a graduate consultant you will work across a range of business domains using a variety of Operational Research techniques including discrete event simulation, decision analysis, spreadsheet modelling and problem structuring.
AN INTERNAL CONSULTANCY . . .
CORDA consultants work with all areas of BAE Systems, getting involved with the major programmes, helping them to make better decisions and understanding their risks. Typical BAE Systems projects that our graduates have been involved with include business modelling for the Type 26 Frigate programme, activity mapping for Submarines, developing pricing models for Finance Services and support to the Typhoon Export programme in the Air domain.
. . . BUT ALSO AN EXTERNAL CONSULTANCY . . .
Alongside our work within the company, we also have a very strong reputation in the external marketplace. We have provided increasing levels of consultancy support into Dstl and the Front Line Commands over the last few years, including running an analytical wargaming programme, developing a simulation model to improve CBRN Hazard Management, and evaluating equipment options for obstacle breaching.
We are also in the process of broadening our offerings beyond defence and anticipate many exciting opportunities to get involved as that takes off.
. . . WITH WIDE-RANGING OPPORTUNITIES
CORDA is based in Farnborough, Hampshire, so this will be your permanent base. We will often require you to work alongside our clients anywhere in the UK so a willingness to travel on an ad hoc basis is essential. There may also be opportunities for you to work overseas or onsite with clients for longer periods of time. In the last twelve months we have graduates take up secondments in the Hague with NATO and visit the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as part of a project team supporting the local BAE Systems team.
Your Learning and Development
Whether you come in with an undergraduate degree, a masters or a PhD you will join our team as a graduate consultant. This is not a placement, it is the start of your career with CORDA and our graduates are given high responsibility straight away. It is our aim to have you working on a project within the first couple of weeks of starting. You will immediately be picking up new skills, engaging with customers and developing your technical expertise.
You will meet your Graduate Capability Manager, who will work with you throughout your time on the programme to support your induction and subsequent career development. They will help you identify the skills and experience that you need to acquire, and the steps you need to take to do so.
Your first pieces of project work are likely to be under the supervision of more experienced consultants. As you progress within the team, you will expect to take on increasing levels of responsibility and to work more independently. To equip you for these opportunities, we have identified a programme of training courses and experiences that will help you develop your consulting skills, your technical skills and your knowledge of BAE Systems and defence in general.
Your career with CORDA doesn’t stop at the end of your two years, you will seamlessly transition into the rest of the team to continue your professional development. As you progress there will be options to specialise in the technical side, to get involved in people management and to take on contract or account management roles. What You’ll Need
To join us in CORDA, you must have an excellent academic record with, or expecting to obtain, at least a 2:1 degree in OR, Maths, Physics or another equally relevant numerate subject. We also welcome candidates educated to postgraduate level in a numerate subject and/or with existing knowledge of Operational Research, business modelling or financial modelling techniques.
Although the academic requirements are important, we also want you to see opportunity where others see problems and think around challenges that others can't navigate. You'll use the resources at your fingertips and the skills you’ll develop to collaborate with your team and find solutions to real life problems.
We place great importance not just on what we do, but how we do it. As a result, we encourage our employees to share their time and expertise to support local communities. At the end of each day, you can walk away knowing that what you do makes a difference.
Your online application will then go through a variety of selection methods, either online or face-to-face, and is likely to conclude at an assessment centre. We particularly welcome applications from women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities, and will make reasonable adjustments to our application and selection process for people with disabilities.
The first assessment centres for the CORDA Graduate Development Programme will be in December. The process will close once we have filled all our positions so if you don’t want to miss this opportunity, an early application is advisable.
Finally, as a defence contractor there are security obligations placed on the Company meaning that all our applicants must be able to successfully achieve the relevant level of security clearance to join us in CORDA.
Hints & Tips
When you prepare your application, think carefully about the role you are interested in and your skills. Use plain English and stick to the word limit. Also make sure to give full details of your degree modules, relevant final year projects and work experience. Hiring managers will want to see what you’ve done and how this fulfils what they are looking for. Also, please note that as we find suitable candidates to fill our opportunities, we will no longer accept online applications for that opportunity so suggest you apply as early as possible to have the best chance of success.
