The Graduate Development Framework is our two year scheme, which develops people who are passionate about and show great potential in their chosen field. By combining formal learning with real world challenges across a number of placements, the GDF will give you a solid foundation to establish a successful career within one of our UK businesses.
Your Learning and Development
We recognise that your development is key for you to fulfil your potential in the world of work. That’s why we’ve created a programme that will support your learning to deliver real business value though it’s up to you to make the most of it.
First things first: Your career with us starts with an induction to welcome you to the business. Here you will meet fellow graduates and find out more about what your future holds.
Shortly after joining, you will be assigned a mentor who can act as a source of advice and insight, should you seek it.
You’ll also participate in ‘Graduate Developing You’, which brings together graduates from across different business areas for a series of personal effectiveness modules, delivered by our award-winning learning and development partner, Impact International.
At the end of your first year you’ll attend our Graduate Conference, where our graduates from across the globe gather in an event comprising speeches from senior BAE Systems people, a selection of educational and interactive workshops, and an exhibition that showcases some of the most interesting work we are engaged in.
All of this will complement your placements to help you realise your potential. In essence, when you take ownership of your career aspirations, we’ll give you support, training and practical experience.

Inspired engineering is the foundation of our business. As a large employer of professional engineers, we support professional accreditation and have opportunities in a wide range of engineering disciplines including:
Electrical & Electronic – Join our Electrical & Electronic Engineers and you’ll make decisions about electronic product content, optimise hardware and software design concepts, develop sophisticated design processes and test complex products.
Manufacturing & Production/Operations – Working in Manufacturing & Production/Operations, you’ll balance costs, safety and quality to transform theoretical designs into physical products that satisfy our customers.
Mechanical – As a Mechanical Engineer, you can help turn ideas into products. You’ll deal with the fabrication, installation, operation, application, maintenance, and repair of mechanical or electromechanical machines, equipment, tools, engines and systems.
Naval Architects – Our Naval Architects deal with the basic structure of the marine system. Join them to help define the essential, core design features and elements that provide the framework for all that follows.
Software – Software Engineers work at the heart of our electrical products at all stages of the product lifecycle. You’ll be
involved in determining initial requirements, designing functional prototypes, developing production standard solutions and testing the finished product to its limits.
Systems – Join our Systems Engineers and you’ll focus on defining customer needs and required functionality, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem.
We have also employed graduates to roles in Aircraft Maintenance, Civil Engineering, Metallurgy, Noise & Vibration Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Product Safety, Research and Structural Engineering. For the full range of our graduate engineering opportunities, visit baesystems.com/graduates
