Lending is one of the most important things we do. Whether it’s to homebuyers or small businesses, start-ups or large enterprises, lending plays an essential role in powering economic growth. In Credit Risk, we provide an effective risk framework and oversight to make sure that RBS makes the right decisions: for our customers, and for our own safety.

We are the largest area in the Risk function, with around 1,000 colleagues based mostly in the UK and Western Europe. Our teams work closely with our customer facing businesses and other areas of Risk in managing credit risk on both a case-by-case basis, and on a portfolio wide level. We set the policies which govern how we lend, and support our business franchises, in setting how much risk the bank is willing to take.

Our graduate programme has been designed to develop dynamic and proactive credit risk talent. We’ll give you the skills and qualifications you need to meet the specific needs and growing requirement for credit risk in the UK.

What you can expect

We offer a two year rotational programme which will give you exposure to the whole credit risk lifecycle, challenging you to contribute to decisions at each stage. You’ll steadily build a broad range of technical credit skills across your placements, augmented with interpersonal skills development to help you become a rounded credit risk professional. Along the way duties will include delivering on a number of analytical projects. In doing so, you’ll have the chance to collaborate and network with colleagues and stakeholders from across the bank, allowing you to practise and enhance key soft skills, such as influencing and decision making.

Who we’re looking for

We believe that great credit risk professionals share a number of key skills and behaviours, which we’ll be selecting for throughout the hiring process. We’ll be looking for intellectual curiosity and an independent mind set. We’ll be looking for a creative approach to problem solving, and for a positive and determined attitude. And because it’s a commitment that goes to the core of who we are as a bank, we’ll be looking for a keen focus on customers.

Whatever your degree discipline, we ask all our graduates to have a minimum 2:1. You don’t need any specific UCAS points or experience.

Permanent roles after the programme will be based in one of our main hubs in Birmingham, Manchester or Edinburgh.

Development and support

You’ll enjoy responsibility at an early stage, and gain experience across all the strategically important areas of the Credit Risk function.

We’ll invest in your talent by supporting you in qualifying for two professional Chartered Banker qualifications. The Certificate and Diploma in Lending skills will enhance your business and technical knowledge which will support your overall development on the programme.

Finally, we’ll offer a structured mentoring programme and opportunities closely related to your goal of becoming a credit risk specialist, giving you everything you need to fulfil your potential.

Future Career Path

The programme will let you develop a broad skill set that can be applied to a number of specialisms within Credit Risk.

If you want to work close to our customers and approve lending or financial products which may create jobs or help a business expand, you could become a credit sanctioner. Or you could become a portfolio manager to take a more holistic view.

Alternatively you might want to follow an advisory or analytical route, and become a recognised subject matter expert in e.g. Financial Analysis, Risk & Policy or Restructuring & Provisioning.

We’ll expect you to spend two years in the Credit Risk function after you’ve completed the programme. After that, the skills you develop with us could help you succeed in any area of the bank.
