Eight-week internship to uncover Britain’s export stars

Possibility for permanent employment afterwards for the right candidate.

A great opportunity to work at a small, dynamic company to research, interview and write about Britain’s up-and-coming entrepreneurs We are looking for bright and outgoing graduates to work on our Sunday Times SME Export Track 100 league table, which identifies the UK’s small and medium-sized companies with the fastest-growing international sales over their latest two years. Recent stars include Tangle Teezer, Monica Vinader and Pukka Teas.

The role

During the eight weeks of your internship you will:

  • Use your initiative to find the UK’s fastest-growing private exporters, using sources such as news articles, financial databases and company accounts
  • Diligently capture financials, corporate structure, and other details on Fast Track’s database (MS Access)
  • Conduct telephone interviews with entrepreneurs and company founders, and write short, accurate profiles
  • Possibly attend some face-to-face interviews/company visits, shadowing a Fast Track researcher and writing up visit notes

The person

  • You are likely to particularly enjoy the opportunity if you have:
  • An interest in entrepreneurs, start-ups and UK private companies
  • Good on the phone and numerate with exacting attention to detail
  • Enjoy internet research and writing
  • Career aspirations in consultancy, accountancy, or as a business analyst or journalist •
  • Suitable for student who have recently finalised their degree, as a successful internship could lead to an offer of a permanent position

Details of internship

  • Starting date: As soon as possible, with internship finishing on Friday 23 December
  • Working hours: typically 8:30 - 5:30 • Pay: £100 a day
  • You will be reporting directly to Ying Chen, our head of research operations, and work under the direction of Richard Tyler, director of research and editorial

  • We run high-calibre invitation-only dinners for the owners and directors of the companies to network and meet with our sponsors, creating distinct alumni networks of entrepreneurs
  • The team has 21 permanent members of staff and six freelancers, some of whom have worked with us for more than ten years
  • Many have postgraduate Oxbridge degrees, accountancy and commercial research experience, and others have worked for major national newspapers and events companies
