Our Approach to Investing

Terra Firma was established by Guy Hands in 1994, originally as Nomura International’s Principal Finance Group (PFG).

We search for opportunities which have been overlooked. We actively seek out investments in sectors which may be out of favour and in businesses which have been under-managed or under-capitalised.

We think and act long-term. We invest time, money and expertise into transforming the strategy, operations and finances of the businesses we acquire. We control and are actively involved in all our portfolio businesses.

Since 1994, Terra Firma has invested over €16 billion in 33 businesses with an aggregate enterprise value of over €48 billion.

The Analyst Programme

We recruit passionate people who will thrive in our creative environment and challenge accepted views.

The rotational programme incorporates the model of an immersive MBA spanning three years. It is designed to give graduates a comprehensive and challenging grounding within the business and a unique perspective on the private equity industry.

You will gain exposure to the deal team environment, investor relations, finance, legal and portfolio business finance. Analysts also spend one full year working within one or two portfolio businesses, which is key to understanding how our businesses operate and appreciating the challenges they face.

In addition you will also have the opportunity to work directly for Guy Hands during the Chief Investment Officer rotation.

At the end of the three year programme, the highest performers will have the opportunity to take on a permanent role within the business.

Who are we looking for?

At Terra Firma, we are fully aware that it is our people who drive returns for our investors and we are committed to developing talent within the firm via our Analyst programme.

We welcome applications to the Analyst programme from experienced candidates as well as new graduates.

You will have an excellent academic track record and have, or be expecting, a 2:1 (or equivalent) from a leading university in the UK or overseas. We will expect you to be numerate, analytical and entrepreneurial, but also have a clear interest in business and the private equity industry. We value collaboration and therefore will also expect you to display a strong sense of teamwork.

We are able to offer work permit sponsorship and welcome applications from non-EU citizens who are currently studying in the UK. A relevant degree subject and an internship within an investment bank or strategic consultancy is an advantage. For more experienced applicants we’re especially interested to hear from candidates who have pursued a graduate training programme in another area of industry and would now like to move into private equity.

Above all, we are looking for individuals who can demonstrate those qualities that reflect our core values of entrepreneurship, passion, creativity and tenacity.

Please note the programme is intended as an entry-level route into Terra Firma and would therefore not be suitable for experienced private equity professionals.
