Holman Fenwick Willan is an international law firm and one of the world's leading specialists in maritime transportation, insurance, reinsurance and trade. The firm is a leader in the field of commercial litigation and arbitration and also offers comprehensive commercial advice. Founded in 1883, the firm is one of the largest operating in its chosen fields with a team of 400 lawyers worldwide, and a reputation for excellence and innovation.

Main Areas of Work
Although "wet" and "dry" shipping litigation with ship finance were the early foundations of our reputation for excellence, we are now well known for our expertise over a broader spectrum of law. We also specialise in:

  • Admiralty and crisis management
  • Insurance and reinsurance
  • Commercial litigation and arbitration
  • International trade and commodities
  • Energy
  • Corporate and financial

Areas of law in which trainees can expect to receive training include 4 of the following:

  • Shipping - admiralty and marine litigation and ship finance.
  • Insurance and reinsurance
  • International trade and commodity litigation
  • Energy - contentious and non-contentious
  • Commerical dispute resolution
  • Non-contentious corporate, property and EU law

Trainees are normally based in London. However, as we also have offices in Paris, Rouen, Piraeus, Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Brussels and Melbourne there is the possibility that trainees may be required to work at another location during their contract.

Facts & Figures
We have 15 trainee vacancies in 2014. We currently have 27 trainees, and a total of 114 partners. We expect to retain all or most of our trainees, though typically we might lose one trainee each year. This can happen for a variety of reasons but no trainee that has left has struggled to find an excellent position as an assistant.

As part of our package we also offer:

  • Private medical insurance
  • Permanent health insurance
  • Accident insurance
  • Four weeks’ holiday
  • Pension scheme
  • Season ticket loan
