A Raleigh expedition is perfect for who are looking to develop key employability skills, explore new cultures and make a real difference to the world they live in. On an overseas expedition with Raleigh you'll work on much needed community and environmental projects, plus undertake a challenging adventure phase.
Raleigh International is a youth and sustainable development charity established in 1984 and runs adventure and challenge expeditions for 17-24 year olds from a wide range of backgrounds, nationalities and life stages. The organisation is committed to increasing the confidence and soft skills of young people as well as contributing to sustainable environmental and community development.
Expeditions operate year-round in Borneo, Costa Rica & Nicaragua and India. This year saw volunteers working on Sun Bear conservation projects in Borneo, constructing schools in remote villages in southern India, and trekking from the Pacific to the Atlantic coast across the width of Costa Rica.
You will be required to fundraise a certain amount towards the expedition and pay for flights, vaccinations and kit. We also offer a range of bursaries worth up to £2,000 for our expeditions, to enable those who otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to take part in an expedition. For more information about this award, and to find out if you are eligible to apply, visit our website.
Benita Sabharwal joined a Raleigh expedition to Costa Rica & Nicaragua with a Raleigh Bursary Award in Autumn 2009:
Before Raleigh, I had just finished my psychology degree at the University of Reading and I was unemployed, searching for jobs and getting nowhere. I wanted to get some sort of experience or skills from it that can help me in the future with employment. I also wanted to do something I enjoyed and was passionate about.
I think Raleigh has really improved my employability skills. I have learnt how to work well with others, helping and supporting each other when we needed it. I can do a lot more than I give myself credit for and I have a lot more confidence now in what I do. Furthermore I come across more positive on application forms because now I actually believe I have the skills they are looking for and I have more unique things to say. My Raleigh experience was amazing and means so much to me. It has helped me in so many ways which I didn’t expect it to and is one of the best experiences of my life. I will never forget it.
