British Sugar is the leading supplier to the UK and Ireland food and beverage markets.

The sole processor of the UK sugar beet crop it produces more than 1 million tonnes of sugar in its 4 factories from 7 million tonnes of sugar beet. The company was the first to manufacture bioethanol in the UK at its Wissington site in Norfolk and seeks to turn all of its inputs into sustainable products.

Located in the East of England and East Midlands, our four state-of-the-art processing plants can match anything in the oil, chemical and power industries for complexity. Together our sites produce over 2.3 million tonnes of sustainable products every year, from sugar to animal feed and electricity to tomatoes.

Around 4,000 farmers contract with British Sugar every year and between September and March each year, seven and a half million tonnes of sugar beet are delivered to our sites. The sugar beet travels an average distance of 28 miles from farms to our factories.

We employ over 900 permanent staff and play an important role in the economic life of the communities in which we operate.

The factories operate around the clock, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s day included.

You will be expected to use the knowledge gained from your engineering degree to continuously improve processes and introduce new technology while keeping the 24/7 operation running like clockwork. All this in an environment where health and safety is simply vital. Within 18 months, you’ll have the opportunity to run your own shift; to lead and be managing the whole process. It’s a massive responsibility.

The scheme is factory-based and offers a job with real management team exposure from day one, involvement in the full production lifecycle and a chance to play a high-profile role in our business. That includes running your own factory sooner rather than later.

You’re going to need a 'can-do' attitude plus a passion for large-scale engineering. As one of our future leaders, you will also need tenacity, an enquiring mind and the ability to deliver innovative, practical solutions.

You’re keen to take on early responsibility because it won’t be long before you’re a Team Leader/Shift Operations Manager within the factory. That means you’ll need great interpersonal skills and have a talent for influencing those around you. A positive approach will be essential, while the ability to problem solve in innovative and lateral ways will be desirable. Of course, in such a challenging environment you’ll need the energy, tenacity and drive to stand out from the crowd.

A 2:1 or higher in one of the following Engineering disciplines; Chemical / Mechanical / Process / Electrical or a degree in Chemistry is the minimum. If you can demonstrate industrial work experience, whether as a placement or summer job, even better.

Willing and able to relocate throughout the course of the scheme

Committed to the demands of a top graduate scheme

Ability to undertake professional qualifications as and when required

The engineering graduate programmes begin with a comprehensive induction to the business, the structure, the market and the business issues we face.  This induction is followed by a series of core training modules to give graduates from all disciplines an insight into general business topics and general management skills.  Throughout the scheme each graduate will be supported by their own personally assigned mentor.  A wide variety of training courses are offered throughout the duration of the programme.

At British Sugar you are encouraged to take ownership of your own career progression to help you develop the expertise and personal qualities you will need to achieve your career goals.  A highly advanced programme of functional training and cross-functional project work will allow you to build wider credibility and competence.

Challenging work, early responsibility and exciting career opportunities are the hallmark of the British Sugar Graduate schemes.  Our flexible programmes provide the optimal combination of practical experience and structured training to prepare you for a career in senior management.
