BAE SYSTEMS Submarine Solutions, in its role as a major defence design and build contractor, deals with a range of metallic materials and production processes that is probably unsurpassed in any other establishment in the UK.

In support of the Barrow site’s extensive design and manufacturing capabilities, BAE SYSTEMS employs an integrated specialised team of highly qualified and experienced metallurgists and welding engineers, whose expertise combines the theoretical and practical application of ferrous and nonferrous materials and joining technology.

The professional team offer a rapid in depth technical advice and support service to Design, Manufacturing, Supply Chain and Quality areas of the Business Unit.

Metallurgy

As a graduate engineer in the metallurgy function you will have the opportunity to develop in depth knowledge of a range of materials and material processing routes by active involvement in departmental activities such as:

• Material selection
• Materials Safety Assessments
• Troubleshooting Consultancy
• Fitness for Purpose evaluation
• Failure Investigations
• Corrosion evaluation
• Evaluation of material properties
• Alternative materials and specifications
• Mechanical testing including Fracture Toughness, Tensile, Bend and Charpy Impact
• Approval testing and evaluation to various Fabrication codes.

In undertaking such activities you will become familiar with a range of metallurgical preparation and testing processes, as well as operating metallurgical examination equipment.

You will be expected to produce detailed and thorough technical reports and documentation, incorporating practical recommendations where
appropriate.

For a graduate to consider working in the metallurgy function; the candidate would be expected to have a metallurgy degree with a minimum 2:1, with consideration given to materials science degrees with a significant metallurgy input.

Graduates within the metallurgy function are actively encouraged and supported to become a Chartered Engineer, and to present & publish technical papers as part of their career development.
