Deadline: 31 May 2012

Location: Barrow

Systems Engineers are in demand increasingly throughout this business as well as the industry. Engineering projects are growing in complexity in a time when large cost over-runs cannot be tolerated. Systems engineers allow the business to manage that complexity, manage the risks associated with large engineering projects and deliver the right product, at the right price and at the
right time.

The Systems Engineer role involves working with the customer and the design team in order to ensure that we are building the right product, to the required quality and cost and that we deliver the product in a realistic timescale. As a result the role requires someone with strong communication, time management and presentation skills and is able to communicate with people at all levels of
the business.

Systems engineers take a holistic view of an engineering task or problem. In the Submarine Solutions business, this means viewing the Submarine (probably the most complex piece of machinery on the planet) as an entire system, made up of a series of sub-systems. Systems engineers attempt to understand the relationship between each sub-system in order to predict the behaviour of the complete system. Therefore Systems engineers spend the majority of their time understanding the problem in order to better inform the design solution, so that involves analysing and understanding customer requirements and understanding the characteristics and behaviours of the System. This means that problems and areas for concern can be identified and managed early in the design lifecycle which reduces (or even removes) their impact in terms of cost and schedule. As a result, systems engineers must have a good engineering degree and be able to think about the wider system rather than focusing on a specific area.

Systems Engineers require a good breadth of engineer knowledge, the GDF will allow graduates to develop this by allowing them to experience different engineering disciplines as well as work closely with our customers. This allows Systems Engineers to build up the required skill set and knowledge base to effectively communicate with both the customer and people from all levels of the business.
It also allows Systems Engineers to undertake courses and training in order to eventually gain Charted Engineer status.

For a Graduate to consider working in Systems Engineering; the candidate would have an Engineering/Science related Degree with a minimum 2:1 result.
