Outgoing technology-minded graduates could be the answer to helping the IT industry out of a recruitment lull.
Research shows the IT sector is still blighted by a view its professionals are 'techie geeks' with no social skills and no social lives because of long working hours.
That is the verdict of two in five of a survey by IT recruitment specialist GCS, and could be the reason why the industry is failing to attract the people it needs to fill vacancies.
Onrec reports demand for IT staff has reached unparalleled levels across Europe, and the future of the UK's IT industry hangs on its ability to shake off its negative image. Just 17 percent view IT as a boring subject, so the interest in IT itself is certainly not the problem, so more graduates are being encouraged to enter the industry after completing their degrees.
GCS managing director Chris Bartlett told Onrec: The IT industry needs to take significant and swift action now to make the necessary changes to avoid a serious shortage of staff and ensure profitable growth in the future.
"It's a common misconception that the IT industry is full of ‘techie geeks' working in back offices, when in fact the reality is that it’s now much more diverse. Part of the challenge is creating a balanced image to attract the right candidates."
