Future of student press at risk

Financial struggles are threatening the future of student newspapers around the country – and reduce the opportunities for graduate careers in journalism.A survey and report by Leeds Student has revealed more than 45 percent of student rags have had to cut their print run or cancel entire issues at least once in the last year. More than 60 percent have failed to meet their advertising target, leaving them short on funding.A total of 13 newspapers were questioned, including Leeds, Manchester, Cambridge and Newcastle.Although Student Unions assist with costs, the printing is normally covered by advertising revenue in excess of £1,000 per issue. Leeds Student reports editors have been axing issues or reducing print runs to save money, however both impact on future advertising opportunities as client confidence is shaken.Advertising worries mean that over 25 per cent of editors have serious concerns about their financial future.Eight out of 13 newspapers also face advertising restrictions from their union, preventing student newspapers from advertising companies that compete with union services such as clubs and bars, removing a potentially rewarding avenue for funding. If student newspapers are axed, the lack of experience available to student journalists could impact on their future careers. Jay Rayner, restaurant critic for the Observer and former Leeds Student editor told Leeds Student: "The problems being faced by the student press, while hardly surprising, are still a huge cause for concern."In an age when far too many people think a BA in journalism sets them up for a career in the media – it doesn’t – we need the student press more than ever. We need people who know stuff about the world, through academic study in disciplines which have nothing to do with the media, who can then use those skills and that knowledge in the service of journalism."
