Graduates urged to consider working abroad

Milkround News, 26 May 2009
The class of 2009 are urged to leave the UK to avoid the worst of the recession.

As more than 300,000 students graduate this summer, the government advises seeking work outside the UK in internships or volunteering.

The BBC reports the National Union of Students is backing the advice which will be handed out at universities as the academic year comes to a close.

The BBC reports figures show there will be a five percent drop in jobs for new graduates this summer compared to last year but Universities Minister David Lammy said internships can lead to a UK job.

He told the BBC: "If you get an internship, you are with a company acquiring skills that are attractive on a CV - and indeed, the company that you do it with might take you on.

"Then beyond that, it's right to say that we live in a global market place, opportunities abroad can add to your skills and sometimes your language skills. And volunteering is always something that's attractive to employers."

Hi! All.

That is something true. Especially private consultants are doing this. Specially this [one firm's] recuritment. They used to tell me previously that, if you have HSMP visas, "We can help". Now I have got the Tier-1 visas but they said in current climate "We can't help. We can only help to candidates with unrestricted right to work in UK". And to back them they are saying it is our client's requirement. Also they never pass the cv for good graduate jobs but if it is something not very good they can pass cv to them because in the end it's all about money they can earn money from us with the job which local candidates are not interested to do so.

I mean how can we say that they are equal opportunity candidates? Can we have any process to take any actions against them? This is highly disoppointing for me... having all the talents, skills and now work experince too they are not processing application because of Tier-1 visas. I would like to ask, what is the gurantee that local candidate will not leave the job in two years time? I lost my job and I am so keen to work and will not change my employer even... but they are not processing this.

Anyway, for me as an international student with 4 years experience as a Site Manager who has spent more than 40,000 pound in 3 years to learn English and do a Masters at the 6th top Uni in the UK; and lost my job offer and whole my savings after all.

I have applied for more than 300 jobs and all 100 top Construction Companies according to the ranking. Recently, I got a leaflet it says "BRITISH JOBS, BRITISH WORKERS" and say NO to foreigners. What do you think? you don't think play with miserable but talented people is enough, Internship these days is the other meaning of slavery to rescue your industries with no payment in recession then when our work permit visa is near to finish say a nice golden goodbye to us. what do you think?
