A survey of 26 university careers services’ reveals there are 10,000 graduate roles available. The Times reports the survey showed more than 3,200 organisations advertising jobs to start this summer, while 800 firms were offering placements or voluntary work. There was an average of 235 organisations advertising at each institute and some universities were advertising nearly 700 vacancies. From this survey it has been predicted there may be up to 40,000 graduate jobs being advertised at all university careers services. Many of the larger companies have finished recruiting for this year, including 90 of the Times Top 100. This means the roles are being advertised are at small or medium-sized enterprises (SME’s), but are giving graduates the chance to develop their skills beyond the academic knowledge they have gained. Even in the depths of the recession companies are still recruiting; there are roles for the class of 2009.Paul Redmond, head of the Careers and Employability Service at the University of Liverpool, said: “Despite the prevailing bad news from the economy, we are getting vacancies from employers on a daily basis. Our concern is that many graduates don’t appear to realise that their careers services are still receiving and promoting vacancies. The message is: even if recruitment markets are quieter than in previous years, employers definitely do want graduates.”
