Graduate employers should look beyond university grades

Educational qualifications should not be the only consideration when recruiting graduates, employers have been told.Recruiter reports Sarah Shillingford, graduate recruitment partner at Deloitte, claims it is impossible to compare university qualifications between one university and another. She urges employers to consider skills which are not part of an academic qualification, telling Recruiter: “While it is said that it’s harder say to get a 2:1 at one university than another, degrees aren’t readily comparable, which provides employers with a challenge."Using candidates' school or even university education as a measure of talent is not necessarily an easy basis for comparison. At Deloitte, we design rigorous assessment processes and methods for our graduate programme, which go beyond our initial academic screening criteria, in order to create a level playing field as well as assess skills beyond academic ones. As an employer, we would welcome a degree system that would assist the comparability of results achieved."

Deloitte set their A-level requirements (UCAS points) really high...and they only accept your 'top 3', this effectively blocks a lot of people from applying...despite their skills. So essentially what Deloitte are saying is...degree's aren't comparable, but A-levels are? And skills are more important than academic qualifications, unless you did them three or more years ago...then academic qualifications are the most important? Interesting...

Despite their insistence on having high demands on the level of UCAS points that block a lot of candidates out...so A levels are comparable but degree's aren't? And academic criteria aren't as important...unless it was three years ago?

Agreed. There are some peoople that get 1st class honours too easily in some low-grade University and others who struggle via working so hard and still get given 2:2. The grade is just shows talent; or "luck" rather.
