Glamour-seeking graduates ignore parents’ practical career advice

Opinions on career paths between parents and their offspring vary greatly.Research from the AAT shows that young people are keen to follow more glamorous careers, with over 50 percent of those polled aiming for roles in the media, marketing advertising and publishing. Practical parents though would rather usher their children into recession proof careers in public services, favouring social services and medical careers. What both parties do agree on is that a career in business or accounting may well be the best way forward with this being approximately 35 percent on both sides favouring this industry. They also agreed that big finance jobs in the city were not the way to go, with 13 percent of students and 17 per cent of parents wanting to pursue this career.Jane Scott Paul, Chief Executive of the AAT said: “Whilst City careers have become a turn-off, young people and parents alike are still recognising the flexibility and options offered by a career in accountancy, and they can’t all be wrong!”

Public services might not be glamorous as media and city jobs but they are certainly stable. The biggest deficit is people pursuing engineering and scientific careers. One just needs to look at the number of jobs and the salaries which start higher than most sectors. These sectors will remain unattractive because they are seen as dirty and mucky etc. I work in engineering construction (graduate) and its dirty dusty greasy and all sorts. However, after my second year I am earning more money than people with experience in public sectors, accountants, lawyers etc. I might be the exception but generally the money is better from the service industry I was working in.
