Graduates have spoken of their success stories using social media to find work in the PR industry.
According to a survey by vox-popPRcareers, more than half of PR graduates have found work placements through social media and many have been eager to speak up their success.
Social media worked for Danielle Williams, 23, from Clevedon. The University of Chester graduate has been offered a job at a top agency in London after her efforts using social media paid off.
She said: "I think graduates looking for a PR role do need to embrace social networking as a tool. The only way they will achieve the job they want is to be persistent and smart in the way they approach their job search. They need to approach it much like they would approach promoting a brand."
"Research who you need to be connected with and then plan what it is you a trying to say. I have made contacts on Twitter with the right people, following one PR person and then investigating and following the people they are following. Then begin networking, there are so many PR people out there that are more than happy to give advice to graduates, after all they have been there themselves. The main thing I have learnt is that the job will not come to you, a graduate needs to be active and smart in their search and social networking, particularly Twitter, is a must."
Andrea Mattis, 24, is studying at City University in London and is a keen user of Twitter to explore job options. She said: “I first started using Twitter for my job search about 4months ago. Since then I have been using Twitter daily to check for graduate roles in PR and Marketing. So far it’s all been good, I have seen jobs that I think I would have missed without Twitter. I have only started using LinkedIn and Facebook. Facebook is good for finding information about graduate job applications.”
LCC student Kimberley Weiss, 23 has also been using Twitter: “I have been following the job market online using Twitter to see what opportunities will be available when I am. It has made me feel more comfortable and confident for when I do look for jobs. You can make a lot of connections online that are helpful in job searches.
She added: “Social media does make it easier for the job seeker to access what is out there and quickly.”
