A month into my placement, I started looking into the future i.e. what work do I do when start my final year of university. Although retail jobs are good and can give you good experience and skills, I feel it would be taking a step down. So I thought to myself, why not apply for work in a creative agency in Hull? Chances are they may not have anything for an undergraduate but if you highlight the fact that you are more than willing to work a couple of hours a week for free, they may ponder on it. Then I started planning how I was going to go about applying for my ideal first job, although this is nearly two years into the future.
Of course it’s important to focus on the here and now as you don’t want to get distracted but it’s also wise to plan for the future. I know countless people who went to university, got their degree then didn’t know what to do with it. When you graduate, you want to be able to know where you’re heading in life and whether you want to go down that path, not ‘oh I need to start applying for work’. If you start planning for the next couple of years now, not only will it help clear the mental clutter in your head but it will also be evident to employers that you have strategic thinking and have good forward planning skills.
Whether you want to go exploring the far corners of the world or volunteering, have a plan otherwise what you wanted to do you may never do, because time has gone so fast you haven't had time to organise anything. Even if you do plan these things and it doesn't work out, you still show that you have organisational skills which are vital in the corporate world.
