Tips for careers in charity from Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK employees were on hand to answer your questions yesterday in the latest Milkround Ask the Expert Q&A.

Volunteering Placement Executive Johnny Keating, Volunteering Contact Executive Andy Robson and intern Jess Nichols spent an hour talking about the best way to launch a career in charity and why they enjoy their roles so much.

When asked how best to get work in the charity sector, Johnny replied: "Volunteer! It really is the best way of getting into the charitable sector - or any sector! The skills, confidence, networks etc. you build really prepare you for work, and they're great examples to bring up in interviews!"

Andy added: "I got into the charity sector because I was looking to do some volunteering while I was looking for work. I found an office based role with Cancer Research UK and just applied. Often the volunteering roles don't require any previous charity experience and once you've got one it gives you some experience for applying for paid work with charities."

Jess said: "I think it is important to show a passion and dedication to working in the charity sector. A really good way to show this is by gaining volunteering experience. Whilst I was at university I spent time volunteering and I feel that has really helped now."
