The mix will vary from firm to firm, but the following criteria are the most critical at the Milkround recruiting stage: applicants need to have an inquisitive and analytical mind, demonstrate the ability to think “out-of-the-box” and be able to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. Companies will also be looking for confident and focussed individuals, with excellent interpersonal skills for client liaison at the highest levels.

Evidence of self-motivation outside of academic studies is essential, ideally through internships with leading blue-chips, banks or consultancies, but entrepreneurial endeavours during university holidays are also looked on favourably.A great deal of emphasis is placed on an applicant’s ability to work as a team player, since consultants work under extreme pressure, and any project team is only as strong as its weakest link. Potential to develop into a leader is also highly desirable, since within a couple of years a consultant may be expected to lead project modules and manage teams on client sites.Consultancy firms are particularly keen to recruit graduates with an international outlook, since clients are often international organisations and overseas travel is a regular feature. Consequently, fluency in a commercially useful foreign language can be a distinct advantage, and even a love of travelling and desire to work in an international environment are likely to have a positive impact.Similarly, a degree of flexibility is an absolute must, as personal wishes will sometimes need to give way to the business requirements of a client.

Competition for places is always very tough and some graduates choose to gain professional experience and qualifications first, within areas, such as accountancy, engineering, or human resources. Many opt to study for an MBA qualification, since many companies actively look for such individuals alongside their graduate recruitment programme.

To MBA or not to MBA
The consulting profession employs one-third of MBA graduates from the leading schools, so securing a place at a top school is a great door-opener. It has become standard practice for firms to sponsor talented employees through their MBA studies, whilst some individuals choose to pay their own way and use the course as a career break between switching companies. Indeed, in some companies an MBA is virtually a prerequisite to proceeding beyond a certain rank, whilst in others it may tip the balance in your favour if struggling to progress. However, be warned that the consultancies are as selective about business schools as they are about universities. Ivy league schools in the States and top European schools such as INSEAD and LBS are all heavily targeted.
