Typically, individuals do not pursue careers in these industries for financial reasons, but more for the other non-pecuniary rewards, such as quality of life and job satisfaction. Consequently, graduate starting salaries tend to be relatively modest (circa £15,000) with some individuals initially taking voluntary positions in order to break into what can be a competitive recruitment market. Salaries can vary greatly depending on location with positions in more rural areas being likely to pay significantly less than those in major cities.

Promotion can be quite rapid, however, for successful individuals with early responsibility and autonomy being given to those who demonstrate their suitability. Nevertheless, salaries are still likely to remain inferior to positions of equivalent authority and responsibility in other industries, although packages for senior managers and directors usually include the usual slew of executive benefits such as a company car, private health insurance and bonuses.
