Although the academic requirements for application onto the Fast Stream programme are relatively modest, the actual recruitment process of assessing individuals against certain criteria is one of the most rigorous around (see Assessment Centres section). The selection procedure places a heavy emphasis on personal attributes such as behaviour and self motivation, as well as looking for excellent interpersonal, time management and written and oral communication skills.
A demonstrable interest in current affairs and the areas of particular relevance to your chosen department will be expected, as will be an ability to understand and analyse complex issues and to sift through masses of information and quickly identify the key points. Another skill that is particularly sought after is the ability to be impartial, seeing things from different perspectives and being able to handle sensitive issues in an appropriate manner. This requires diplomacy and the confidence to be decisive in sometimes difficult situations.
As a general requirement, fast stream entry is restricted to UK nationals, although there are some areas where exceptions are granted, and the majority of other Civil Service positions are open to EEA or EU nationals and citizens of Commonwealth countries (check website for details).
