IT
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is integral to almost all business activities and therefore spans a diverse range of employers from consultancies, outsourcing companies and software houses, through to end users, such as banks and blue-chip organisations with their own in-house IT departments. In essence, all IT positions involve producing an end solution for a client, whether they be in the same company or another organisation. There is demand in the industry, but not just for information technology graduates; relevant technical skills can be taught on graduate training programmes. Induction courses aim to ensure that all entrants have similar levels of experience in a range of areas, including business awareness, development methods and programming languages.
Telecommunications
The telecommunications industry has been transformed in recent years as increasingly advanced mobile phones and the installation of broadband in homes has changed the way people communicate with each other. Technology has progressed to allow for instantaneous communication between people and the companies behind it are prospering. This means the main graduate employers are the major telecommunications companies, such as BT, Virgin Media, Orange and O2, and equipment manufacturers. As a technology-focused industry, if you become involved in the cutting edge developments there is ample opportunity to learn advanced skills and put them to the test in dynamic working environments. However, business minds are behind the gadgetry meaning the industry has vacancies for graduates of all disciplines.
