Publishing
There are many different types of jobs available and, therefore, a variety of skills needed, but as a general rule you will need a good command of English, excellent attention to detail, computer literacy and good interpersonal skills. Publishing is a deadline-based industry so organisational skills are essential.

Key qualities for the position of Editor include the ability to manage problems, resources and relationships, commercial astuteness and leadership and team-working skills. Lots of experience and an impressive track record are probably going to be more important than postgraduate editorial qualifications.Obvious requirements for Commissioning Editors are excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills, as they will be dealing with authors and literary agents. Any project management experience will be advantageous to demonstrate ability for organising and monitoring budgets and deadlines.

Journalism
Whichever branch of journalism you are interested in, all require a range of basic qualities including curiosity, an eye for a story, interpersonal skills, the ability to write in a clear and interesting way, and, perhaps most important of all, the ability to produce work to deadline. Knowledge of shorthand and other secretarial skills, and experience of various desktop publishing packages will also stand in your favour.
