Publishing
Salaries in publishing are relatively modest initially (starting at around £15,000) due to the popularity of careers in the industry. Nevertheless, career progression can be quite rapid and successful individuals can expect to be earning between £25,000 and £30,000 after five years.
After several years in the industry individuals, if they have not done so already, typically start to specialise within a particular field or genre.
Journalism
One of the most important journalistic skills is research. If you still think it is a well-paid job, you obviously have just failed in the research department. Work experience placements frequently pay little or no salary and even full time journalists with several years experience earn relatively modest wages.Graduate starters can expect to earn between £10,000 and £18,000, with the higher end salaries being paid by national organisations in London. Thereafter salaries will depend on the size of the company and specialist nature and responsibilities involved in the work.
As an individual gains experience and builds up their reputation, so the amount they can expect to earn should grow, sometimes quite significantly, especially if working on a freelance basis.
