Positions in internet careers are generally focused on producing or controlling web content or the construction and maintenance of the actual network connections.
Web Design
Working in web design will mean liaising with clients and constructing sites that they require. To do so you will need to be able to programme to high levels using languages such as HTML and XHTML, CSS, Javascript, Actionscript, ColdFusion, .Net, Flash, or using code-generating programs, such as Dreamweaver and Visual Studio; Ecommerce. You will have creative input advising on how you think the site would work and look best.
Web Manager
As a web manager you will be in charge of the content on a given website. This could be in the public domain or on a company’s intranet. To do so you will have to work with designers, editors and developers to make sure that the sight is reaching its target audience. Some of your main tasks will be to be involved in maintenance and development of the site, analyse statistics of web use, promoting the site, checking the quality and legality of content on site and reporting technical errors.
Network Engineer
Although this is not primarily a graduate career, your degree will help you to progress into management roles. As an engineer you will design, implement and maintain computer connections, whether this is a Local Area Network, Wide Area Networks or Global Area Networks. To do this will require you to install software and hardware, creating user profiles, ensuring security of the network, identifying and fixing network problems, providing technical training to users and look to future developments of networks.
Ecommerce
Ecommerce does not require that you are a graduate but a good knowledge of business and computing software is essential. Ecommerce takes most element of normal business, except that rather than shop selling, you do so through the internet. This means you will have to source suppliers and produce, set up logistics and sell your product. You will need an excellent website that is user friendly and allows customers to get to what they want at the price they require. If this is achieved and your site well marketed then there is no reason why it won’t be a success.
New Media
The Internet has a website for pretty much everything, and for that reason covers all speciality pursuits and interests. News, jobs, shopping, entertainment, hobbies – it is all there together with community sites and the bloggers. But behind all this is the usual array of media professionals including content writers, producers, product managers, designers and sales people. Given the level of computer demands, a well-qualified IT department is vital. They will all work at keeping the site updated and developing for its future. There will also be job roles depending on what the aims of the site are and what service it seeks to provide. For example, content writers will normally be hired according to their proven writing skills or knowledge of a site’s speciality area.
