Getting the most from job chatrooms

Why use a chatroom?
Chatrooms are a great way to meet potential employers, find out what it might be like to work for them and get a feel for whether you are suitable for a job. As an informal forum, chatrooms don't have the same level of pressure as walking into an interview for a job. You'll be able to put public questions to employers who will be keen to offer information to potential candidates. There is also the added benefit of reading the answers to plenty of others asking questions you might not have even thought of.

When you enter a chatroom, you will be able to see the names of all the people logged on and read an on-screen dialogue of what they are all saying. Your questions will also appear there along with the responses to them. Chats tend to last for a couple of hours and you are free to come and go as you like during that time.

Preparing for a chatroom
Researching about the company hosting the chatroom is a good place to start your preparations. Get an idea of the basics such as where they are based and its history from the company website which should lead to some ideas about what you want to know in terms of its culture. Then look at the jobs available, and think about what you want to know about the role.

Questions covering benefits, salary, company culture and personal development are common and give a feel for what you might be doing if you were hired. Employers are much more likely to engage with talkative chatroom guests so if your questions get asked, try to think of new ones or add to the current discussion.

It is worth remembering employers are likely to take the opportunity to ask about qualifications, previous experience and, most importantly of all, invite select chatroom users to apply for jobs or even offer them a role. If an employer you would like to join has organised a chatroom during its recruitment period, ensure you are able to take part in the discussions as it could be your opportunity to make a lasting impression.
