Construction
The prospects for the construction industry are good in the south east with many major projects coming up. The most high profile of these are the 2012 Olympics which is the catalyst for the regeneration of East London and the £16 billion Crossrail project through the capital, joining Maidenhead in west London to Essex in the east. Other key areas of growth include public housing with property prices still high, the commercial sector and possibly new nuclear power stations to meet increasing energy demands. This buoyant period for the construction industry suggests there will be ample opportunities to progress in the industry, however they will be concentrated in the south rather than the midlands or further north.

Where you choose to work and the area in which you choose to specialise can also have an effect on career progression and future earnings but the most recent survey shows an average salary for the profession is around £36,500. By working overseas or in areas such property fund management you can potentially earn much more but the opportunity to specialise in some of the more technical disciplines might not be available.
