Internet & Ecommerce
As a relatively new industry career development is quite unstructured with there being a demand for people who have specialised skills in new technologies. Though as the industry develops and matures so is the career structure and is starting to fit a mould with different management levels. Graduates entering into web based careers can expect to earn between £15,000 and £20,000. Then you can progress to team leader or be a project manager depending on the size of company that you are involved with. After this you can progress to roles as senior designer or management where you can start to earn 40k. Following the ecommerce route will allow your potential earning to be boundless depending on your entrepreneurial skills and the prospects are up to you.
New Media
Also as a relatively new industry, it is hard to tell exactly what the prospects are for anyone involved in new media. While there are numerous roles from programming, content and sales right up to general management both among in-house departments and independent businesses, the fast-paced evolving of Internet habits mean changes could happen quickly. Another dotcom crash would put a lot of people out of work, but seems unlikely. If broadband popularity continues to grow, an ever-increasing number of businesses to feed that demand will be needed and lead to more jobs. Few companies are turning a huge profit though, so it seems new media will never be in the same wage league as the major industries such as banking and accounting. Average wages with a few years experience are around £22,500 - £27,500.
