Arts
The art business is very tough and lots of motivation is required. Very few graduates in arts degrees become successful individual art practioners, however if this is the career you wish to follow then you need to ensure your work gets noticed. This means creating an excellent portfolio and exhibiting it in the right places to build interest. There are many outlets for your creative nous in most companies and industries. For example, roles in marketing, advertising and design need artists. Then there are positions where you can work in interior, web or digital design. All across the board creative minds are required to help reinvigorate and sell companies.

Entertainment
Entertainment is often seen as a glamorous career and a chance to schmooze with the rich and famous, but realistically very few enter into this world. As an industry with such a high profile many students pursue a career in this business only to find few succeed without luck being as important as skill. As the old saying goes: “It’s not what you know – it’s who you know”.In terms of work the term entertainment covers several sectors including music, drama, TV and film. Within this there are positions to perform, direct or work behind the scenes to bring the shows together. Here is where there is wider scope for you to enter the industry in technical roles such as lighting, sound camera work but even here the competition is tough.

Media
The rise of the Internet and an ever-increasing adoption of broadband has enabled the media industry to become even more fast moving and demanding for those involved in its activities. Together with newspapers, magazines, television, film and all the advertising and PR that go with them may sound like a land full of opportunity. However, this is a crowded, predominantly London-based work place that can be extremely challenging and hard to get into, let along make your mark. Working in the audio visual industry does not just have to be in the public eye – there are numerous jobs behind the scenes which you may not even have thought about.

Whether it is in film, television, animation, radio or even computer games, it is a popular industry with many careers involved. As well as the more high profile roles such as television and radio presenters or film directors, you could work as a researcher, technician, editor, programmer or, at entry level, a runner (someone who generally works for free doing odd jobs of the paid employee to gain experience and contacts). It can be hectic with few opportunities to earn megabucks, but it is very often a lot of fun. It is a close-knit industry, however, with newcomers finding it hard to break into an inner circle who tend to work with each other on a regular basis rather than put their faith in someone new. Get in and get recognised any way you can to land a plum role.
