Energy and utilities
The oil, gas and petroleum sectors face a critical time in the near future with rising prices caused by the increasing difficulty to obtain them. Better technology will enable high risk, previously unreachable supplies to be extracted, but the abundance of the fuels is rapidly running out. Together with concerns the government is not on target for reducing carbon emission reductions, the challenge for the energy industry as a whole is how to identify alternative renewable resources while also encouraging the uptake of energy-saving measures by all.
As a result, there are exciting, if pressurised, times ahead for this industry, which will be ideal for green-minded graduates. The return of nuclear power on the political agenda in the UK has been met with intense debate over safety fears while wind farm initiatives have suffered from planning permission being rejected and backers pulling out of projects. There is no easy-fix to the long term problem of providing energy for the nation, and the challenges should mean graduate prospects are very promising.
