Business and management degrees are excellent for laying a foundation of key transferable skills to put to use in the workplace. Awareness of business analysis, marketing, sensitivity to organisational needs and quantitative research together with a knowledge of concepts such as e-commerce, creativity, enterprise, knowledge management, sustainability and globalisation to make you a valuable asset to firms from any industry.

There is a huge range of choice. If you have specialised your degree by choosing modules such as accounting or human resources, these will help you get into the relevant role or industry and even count towards a professional qualification. For example, if accountancy work is of interest then many companies will allow you to train for relevant qualifications either within your job or around it. These might include work towards an endorsement from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants or Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Although Law is off slightly off the beaten track, a conversion course will lead you comfortably into this area too.

With a strong knowledge of business ideas, you are highly employable. Whether it is advertising, banking, logistics, finance, personnel management and general management in both the public and commercial sectors you will be seen as an ideal candidate for a graduate training programme or entry level job. If you have a experience in a related role, you will be at an advantage or even have the opportunity to start you career in a position of more responsibility.

Graduating within business and management does provide you with a range of job opportunities. The recent graduate batch (2009), is currently working across different sectors such as marketing, sales, finance and retail. The commercial, industruial and public sector is the most popular with 21.2 percent. Accountants however, are according to the recent numbers, more attracted to business and financial services (44.2 percent).

Some business and management graduates also see their it as a stepping stone to a Masters. Of the 2010 Business and Management graduates, 4.5 percent chose further education. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is the most popular business related Masters programme for those who have already gained experience. It is a highly sought after qualification and is seen as offering a forward leap in career terms. MBAs teach techniques of business management and incorporate a range of business theory from leadership, finance, operations and people management as well as practical components such as real life business projects. Around 65 percent of business and management graudates were in employment six monthafter graduating.
