Starting in a science career you will generally need a 2.1 in an area related to the one you want to specialise in. You will generally be required to have 5 GCSEs including English, Math’s and Science and at least two A Levels. On top of this, many companies may expect further study either prior to employment or on the job, whether it is a MSc or PhD. These are most important if you want to progress, but many research roles will help you with your further study.

As a research-based career there is a need to keep up-to-date with your subject as new theories and technologies develop. Different ways of doing this is keep training with your company, attending lectures and seminars and to continue reading science journals. A graduate could consider continuing their study, joining different fellowships and professional bodies that will generally require taking exams and take part in continuing professional development programs which these institutes should offer. Many of these will be registered with the science council and will be of more benefit for you to join.
