Police
There are many different roles available as a police officer and positions vary from division to division. Working as an officer or within the Criminal Investigation Department will mean you are dealing with a variety of crimes from shoplifting to serial killers. As an officer you will be the first line of response to incidents such as accidents, disputes and crime. You will have to attend road traffic accidents and deal with dangerous situations. Being the first on a crime scene will mean that you will have to interview, take statements, search and gather evidence in accordance with regulations. From here you will have to make arrests and follow cases through to conclusion from recording details of crimes to giving evidence in court.
Working as a detective means that you will be involved in crime fighting, but will take on managerial responsibilities too. It may take several years to get into these positions as experience is required, and then the crimes that will be dealt with are of a much more serious nature such fraud, arson, rape and murder.
Nurse
Meeting patient requirements and building trust is a must for a nurse so they understand what will be best for patients. Nurses have to adhere to many different types of task within their roles from minor injuries to aiding in patient welfare in emergencies always considering patient care and family needs.
Depending on whom you work with and where you work your role will vary highly. Duties will include preparing patient care plans and implementing these through administering drugs or preparing patients for operations. You will observe and record patient data, set up drips and carry out blood transfusions while working in a team where you will have to organise and structure workloads. All this must be done with patients and families best interests at heart.
Paramedics
A paramedic’s job role will have much variation as they respond to real life situations. The main focus is reacting to medical emergencies: big or small. You may have to attend fires, car accidents, dangerous crimes and many other scenarios. In these situations you will have to assess a patient’s condition and follow the appropriate course of action. From this you will have to resuscitate and stabilise patients using technical equipment, administer drugs and ensure patient and public safety, then transfer patients to hospital.
Outside of this you will have to keep patient records and ensure the standards of your vehicle and equipment are kept to adequate levels. You could also work on motorcycle or helicopter response.
Firefighter
A firefighter’s role can be varied being called to many different situations to help the public. There are different set duties though and most stations will work in similar ways. Most stations will work with 6 men crews and you will work 42 hour weeks in shifts, so late nights and weekend work can be expected.Typical duties will be attending emergencies whether they are fires, traffic accidents, chemical spillages or accidents caused by dangerous weather.
These rescues will be in dangerous environments where you may be working at height, in water, near to fires or potential explosions. Working in this environment will also mean that you will have to be able to administer first aid. Not only will you have to safeguard people that you are rescuing though you will have to be aware of public safety, and your crews well being including yourself. There is also a community responsibility required where you will have to advise on fire safety and educate to try to reduce future accidents.
Day-to-day duties will include carrying out drills and training as well as maintaining physical fitness that is required. You will also have to maintain and check equipment to ensure working order from breathing apparatus to the fire trucks.
