Police
To work in the police force you will need a strong moral centre of honesty and integrity. You should also be an excellent communicator and people person as you will be dealing with the community and an added ingredient of diplomacy and tact will help you along. Calmness under extreme pressure is a must as you will have to make difficult decisions and there is a definite requirement for commonsense.

Nurse
To work as a nurse is an extremely demanding job, and being a good people person with diplomacy can get you a long way. You will have to listen and relate to people of all backgrounds and ages, and really want to help people. You will have to be strong minded, patient, mature and have a sensitive persona to succeed. As the work is high pressured you will need to be able to stay calm under pressure and be able to make good decisions. Working long hours means you will need to be flexible and have lots of stamina to keep going through your shifts.

Paramedics
As a paramedic you will often be working under pressure having minimal time to respond and make decisions. Calmness is essential. You will need to be strong mentally as you will often have to deal with fatalities. There are technical skills that you will need and you will have to be practical to get the best possible results from a situation. When working in these situations communication is essential to make sure instructions are carried out correctly. This will also include leading and managing team members and the public. You will need to be able to use IT and communications systems and be able to drive quickly and safely in emergencies.

Firefighters
Firefighters need to be in good physical shape and will have to have good eyesight and hearing and pass medical tests. As the work can be extremely pressurised you need to be able to make calm and correct decisions. You will need to be strong mentally as you will often have to deal with fatalities. There is a strong ethos on team work and you will need to be able to follow instructions as well as having excellent communication skills. You will also be working a lot with technical equipment and tools so good practical attributes are required.

Once you have entered the fires service you will carry out a minimum of 80 days at training school. Here you be taught many of the fundamentals such as fire extinction, ladder safety and first aid. You will also be introduced to the equipment that you will have to use from cutting tools to breathing apparatus.After you have completed this you will then enter into Phase 2 where you will spend between 18 months and 3 years completing on the job training before you undergo your final tests.
