The UK Graduate Careers Survey 2012, produced by High Fliers Research, interviewed 17,737 final year students at 30 top universities in March 2012. The survey confirms that Milkround has been used by 45 per cent of finalists during their job search, the largest market share recorded by any graduate recruitment website in the 18 years that High Fliers Research has produced its annual survey.

Milkround has now been the most-used graduate recruitment website in The UK Graduate Careers Survey in eight out of the last 12 years and, according to internal SiteCatalyst metrics, has averaged 467,611 visits a month in 2012 - an increase of 41 percent on the same period last year.

In the last 12 months Milkround made a statement of intent by updating its tagline to 'careers of the highest degree', highlighting a commitment to helping students and graduates gain career confidence. This has included giving users direct access to employers and experts in the form of live Q&A session which give you the chance to get personalised career advice.

All future developments will be led by this vision to provide students and graduates information that offers clarity to their careers and jobs from internships and placements through to graduate jobs and schemes.

That dedication includes the ongoing publication of Graduate Career, it’s free quarterly supplement in The Times featuring content by its leading journalists. Graduate Career together with its microsite, offer exclusive reports on the jobs market, case studies of graduate employees and detailed insights into a wide range of career areas. The latest edition is out today (Wednesday, May 23rd) featuring a report on why banking is facing a loss in popularity among graduates, a Diamond Jubilee spotlight including how the Royal Household offers a prestigious career option, what really happens in an HR role, the winners of The Times Graduate Recruitment Awards 2012 and whether internships are still worth considering.

General Manager Rachel Johnson said: "To be number one for the fifth year in a row is an incredible achievement by Milkround and we’re delighted finalists continue to use us as a key tool in launching their graduate careers. The 45 percent has also means we have widened the gap on our closest competitor – and we aim to do even better next year.

"We’re committed to building career confidence among all students and graduates as they face a tough task finding a job in the current economic climate. We want to ensure they can find the help and guidance they need to build up their CVs while at university, then the jobs matching their career aspirations."

Graduate Jobs From Milkround

<a10:rights type="text">© Copyright 2011-2012 Milkround</a10:rights>

Record number of applications for graduate jobs as hunt starts early

University finalist have made a record number of applications for graduate jobs this year and started looking earlier than ever.

The UK Graduate Careers Survey 2012, published today, quizzed more than a fifth of all finalists graduating this summer, revealing an unprecedented 40 percent rise in the volume of graduate job applications compared with 2010. Students at the 30 universities included in the survey have made an estimated 360,000 job applications this year, compared with 343,000 in 2011 and just 257,000 in 2010.

More than two in five of finalists (42 percent) – the highest proportion for 12 years – believed they would either start a graduate job or be looking for a graduate job after university, compared with 40 percent in 2011 and 36 percent in both 2010 and 2009.

The survey also shows that more than a third of students started researching their career options in the first year of their studies, and more than two-fifths of finalists made job applications to graduate employers at least 12 months before leaving university.

Postgraduate study remains a popular alternative to employment with a quarter of finalists applying for further study, but the number of students taking time off or going travelling after university has dropped to its lowest level ever – just 12 percent of finalists intend to have a break after their studies.

For the first time since 2002 marketing is the most popular destination for new graduates, ahead of teaching, the media, charity or voluntary work, and consulting. Applications for graduate jobs in investment banking have returned to their highest level since 2008.

Industries such as engineering, law and the Armed Forces have dropped in popularity, and the number of graduate job hunters keen to work in public sector has dropped by more than a fifth over the last two years.

Expected graduate starting salaries remain at an average of £22,600, but after five years in work today’s graduates expect to be earning an average of £39,900. A sixth of this year’s university-leavers believe their salary will be £100,000 or more by the age of 30.

London is the first-choice destination for finalists: a record 49 percent of student job hunters hope to work in the capital after graduation.

Managing director of High Fliers Research, Martin Birchall, said: "Just two years ago, during the worst of the recession, many of the country’s brightest university leavers opted out of job hunting altogether and instead enrolled for further study or took a gap year, in the hope that employment prospects might be better when they returned.

"So whilst the ‘Class of 2012’ may not be any more optimistic about the graduate employment market than their predecessors, those leaving university this summer have taken an especially pro-active approach to the challenges of finding a graduate job."

Graduate Jobs From Milkround

<a10:rights type="text">© Copyright 2011-2012 Milkround</a10:rights>

One in five black students victim of race hate

Nearly one in five black students who responded to a National Union of Students survey have been the victims of at least one racial hate incident.

The NUS claims 18 percent of respondents had been affected with verbal abuse, threats of violence or threatening behaviour the most common types of incident.

In February Crown Prosecution Service figures showed an increase in hate crime, and nearly half (48 percent) of Asian and Asian British students respondents to the NUS survey reported fear about being subject to racial prejudice.

More than two in five (42 percent) reported incidents took place in and around educational institutions. More than half (54 percent) of the victims of race hate incidents had considered leaving their courses as a result.

No Place for Hate: Race and Ethnicity, is the fourth in a series of NUS research reports funded by the Home Office which analyses responses from over 9000 students across further and higher education.

The report calls on universities and colleges to take an active role in making campuses safer for potential targets of hate crime.

Kanja Sesay, NUS Black Students’ Officer, said: "Racially motivated hate crimes have not gone away and universities cannot afford to turn a blind eye any longer.

"There are already significant barriers to going to university for Black students and if universities refuse to acknowledge that these problems exist on their campuses then those barriers will grow."

Graduate Jobs From Milkround

<a10:rights type="text">© Copyright 2011-2012 Milkround</a10:rights>

New graduate jobs just added to Milkround

Get your applications in early with the latest graduate jobs added over the last week.

Nearly a third of office workers (31 percent) in a survey of 800 claimed an internet malfunction was the situation they found most stressful, ahead of the 18 percent who get most stressed over too much work.

Other common stressful issues were a bad commute (14 percent), dealing with end of year accounts (11 percent) and meeting tardiness (nine percent). Just one percent got overly stressed about a lack of tea or coffee.

A spokesperson from ECigaretteDirect, who compiled the survey, said: "Many of us don’t realise how stressful the office environment can be as it just melts into the fabric of everyday life.

"However, it’s no surprise that internet malfunctions came top of the list. In today’s technology driven age so much of what we do is reliant on being online we often feel lost and frustrated without it.

"One crack in this delicate technology and an entire office can be brought to a complete standstill, with the potential to reduce a company’s output to zero."

Graduate Jobs From Milkround

<a10:rights type="text">© Copyright 2011-2012 Milkround</a10:rights>

Trebling tuition fees did not improve student contact time

Students are receiving no more teaching time with their tutors than they were before tuition fees were trebled.

A poll of 9,000 students found undergraduates have an average of 13.9 hours teaching time a week - almost no change from six years ago before the introduction of top up fees.

A similar poll in 2006 found students had an average of 13.7 hours teaching time a week. Teaching time is defined as contact with tutors such as timetabled tutorials, seminars and lectures a week.

However, undergraduates are dedicating more time to private study: in 2012 students reported an average of 14.4 hours of private study per week – a significant increase over the 13.1 hours in 2006 and 12.7 in 2007.

In a report on the findings by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), it states: "There appears to be some evidence that students are working a little harder – in their own time - but in terms of the amount of teaching contact that they have, and the size of the groups in which they are taught – the increase in fees has led to no change.

The report adds: "Both in 2006 and 2007 [students] said that their top priority for the use of increased fees should be in improving staffing ratios; and when in opposition the Government insisted that it would only countenance increased fees if students were able to see a commensurate improvement in the provision that was made for them."

With another increase in tuition fees coming this September, NUS President Liam Burns has hit out at the lack of progress being made to enhance the university experience. He said: "The Government claim that by shifting the burden of funding even further from government spending to student borrowing that they have put students at the heart of the system but this survey casts further doubt on that assumption.

"Whether we like it or not students going on to campuses this year will feel like they're paying more and will have increased expectations to match but there is no evidence that shifting the financial burden to students gives them more power. Successive governments have forced students to act as consumers of teaching rather than partners in learning and there is no evidence that this has improved universities.

"Students must be given real influence over their university experience and it is clear that changing funding from investment to loans does not increase the amount going into teaching and does not give students the power to direct their learning."

Graduate Jobs From Milkround

<a10:rights type="text">© Copyright 2011-2012 Milkround</a10:rights>

Upcoming deadlines

Don’t miss these graduate job deadlines: you’re running out of time to take advantage of these opportunities with top employers.

The chief executive of internet giant Yahoo, Scott Thompson, has stepped down from his role over a fake computer science qualification on his CV.

It is alleged this led to his dismissal by the board.

In a similarly high profile case of falsifying an educational history, Lee McQueen won the BBC's reality programme The Apprentice despite lying on his CV, but still faced criticism from recruitment experts who questioned his integrity.

Both Thompson and McQueen's lies on their CVs highlight the repercussions faking credentials can have on your career. In Thompson's case he has lost his job and, although McQueen has been successful, he faced a public backlash against his CV tactics.

Recruitment firm Hays claims employers are using stricter checks and measures against candidates that are catching out those who try to stand out from the crowd by falsifying skills on their CV.

Hays warns that social media, LinkedIn, background checks and references will be used by HR departments and recruitment agencies to ensure they are getting all the talent a CV suggests, but even those who land a job by lying on their CV can be caught out.

Anyone found to have lied on their CV can be liable for the sack, and it makes for an embarrassing - and potentially damaging - blot on a career history.

Hays Director Charles Logan said: "The competition for jobs is tough and companies are facing a race to secure top talent. Therefore, employers are using all the tools available to them, including social media, to ensure they are hiring who they think they are.

"This, in turn, puts pressure on candidates to stand out from the crowd and can tempt them into embellishing their CV. However, stretching the truth on your CV is a waste of time, as HR departments and recruitment agencies always carry out thorough employment and qualification background checks.

"When looking for a new job, jobseekers should carefully consider the roles they apply for and ensure the roles are a good fit for their skills. If jobseekers approach their job search correctly and invest the time to sell the skills and qualifications they do have, they should have no reason to stretch the truth on their CV."

Graduate Jobs From Milkround

<a10:rights type="text">© Copyright 2011-2012 Milkround</a10:rights>

Flexible working keeps employees happy

Just four percent of employers do not provide flexible working to at least some of its employees.

Research by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has revealed almost all employers offer some form of flexible working and seven out of ten report flexible working supports employee retention, motivation and engagement.

The CIPD study also found almost two thirds of employers believe flexible working supports their recruitment and half believe it has a positive impact on reducing absence as well as on boosting productivity.

The results mean that graduates are likely to be able to enjoy perks such as working from home or flexible working hours, used by 25 percent and 20 percent of employers respectively. Other popular flexible policies include working part time (32 percent) and mobile working (14 percent).

Graduates are more likely to get flexibly working at a micro or small firm (90 percent and 78 percent respectively) than working for medium (67 percent) or large-sized employer (29 percent).

Ben Willmott, of the CIPD said: "From the employee perspective, flexible working is linked to higher levels of employee engagement and wellbeing. Our report finds that employees satisfied with their work-life balance are more likely to be engaged and less likely to say they are under excessive pressure.

"This report shows that a significant proportion of those employees who don't work flexibly would want to do so - particularly those below management level. It also finds that many flexible working solutions are not widely used, for example job sharing or the use of annualised hours - or are only available to more senior staff. Managers are much more likely to be able to work from home or benefit from mobile working than other members of staff and while, this is partly likely to be because of differences in the nature of the work between managers and their employees, in some organisations, it is because of culture and ingrained attitudes."

Graduate Jobs From Milkround

<a10:rights type="text">© Copyright 2011-2012 Milkround</a10:rights>

New jobs, internships and apprenticeships this week!

Get your applications in early with the latest graduate jobs added over the last week.

Indirect Discrimination
Indirect discrimination occurs when an ‘apparently neutral provision, criterion or practice’ (PCP) puts or could put people sharing a protected characteristic at a particular disadvantage, compared with others. Indirect discrimination does not apply to the protected characteristic of pregnancy and maternity, although indirect sex discrimination might apply.

A PCP includes, for example, any formal or informal policies, rules, practices, arrangements, or conditions. It may also include decisions to do something in the future – such as a policy that has not yet been applied – as well as a ‘one-off’ or discretionary decision.

The PCP must be applied to everyone in the relevant group, whether or not they have the protected characteristic in question and, on the face of it, it must be neutral.

Harassment
Harassment takes place where someone is subjected to unwanted conduct related to a relevant protected characteristic, the perception that they have a protected characteristic, or their association with people who have a particular protected characteristic. It might also be related to the protected characteristic generally, without any connection with the worker themself, or it might be related to the protected characteristic but not because of it. Harassment takes place whether the reason for the conduct is deliberate or is an unintended effect of the conduct. An individual does not have to explicitly claim that behaviour was ‘unwanted’ for it to be seen as harassment.

Harassment cannot be justified.

The two protected characteristics of pregnancy and maternity and marriage and civil partnership are not covered by the general harassment provisions, since they are protected in another way (pregnancy and maternity harassment as harassment related to sex, and harassment related to civil partnership as harassment related to sexual orientation).

To make a claim, someone has to show that:

- their dignity had been violated; or
- they had been subjected to an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment.

But it is not necessary for them to show that another person was, or would have been, treated more favourably.

If unwanted conduct is carried out with the purpose of violating the dignity of another person or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for that person that amounts to harassment regardless of its effect on the person concerned. Equally, regardless of its purpose, unwanted conduct will amount to harassment if it has this effect on the person concerned. In many cases, unintentional conduct or even conduct that is intended to be funny or friendly, may amount to harassment.

An employer can never justify harassment and will be liable for acts of his employees.

Where the unwanted conduct is of a sexual nature it is described as sexual harassment, and a worker is further protected if they are treated less favourably because they have submitted to, or rejected, sexual harassment or unwanted conduct relating to sex or gender reassignment.

Victimisation
Victimisation occurs when someone is subjected to a detriment, because they have done a ‘protected act’ or their employer believes they have done so or may do so in the future.

The following are protected acts:

- Bringing proceedings under the Equality Act
- Giving evidence or information in connection with proceedings under the Act
- Doing any other thing which is related to the provisions of the Act
- Making an allegation (whether or not express) that someone has contravened the Act.
- Making or seeking a relevant pay disclosure to or from a colleague.

As with harassment, victimisation can never be justified. To establish victimisation a complainant simply needs to show that they were subjected to a detriment, and does not need to compare their treatment to that of a real or hypothetical person.

An individual is protected from victimisation even if the allegation turns out to be wrong, providing that it was made in good faith.

The motivation of the person committing the act of victimisation may be conscious or unconscious. Those committing the alleged act of victimisation must have knowledge of the protected act.

Liability for acts of victimisation may also extend to acts committed after the end of the working relationship, such as refusing a reference request.

Three out of five Black Students do not expect to be in work within six months of graduating.

This is the startling, and let’s face it, depressing finding from a two year research study by the London based charity Elevation Networks and published by its partner The Bow Group.

Conducted to understand the perceptions of Black undergraduates the Race to the Top: the Experiences of Black Students in Higher Education report also found:

Black students felt they would face discrimination when attempting to pursue a career in the legal services, media, fashion and financial services industries.

68% of Black students expect to be earning less than £25,000 in their first graduate role.

Black students generally believe there is not currently enough mentoring or support given to them to assist them in their choice of where to go to university.

There is a sizeable discrepancy between the expectations of Black students and the outcomes they face following graduation.

The report, as expected goes on to make a number of policy recommendations including the proposal for the Government to add a diversity element to any new State-produced University league table that is published. This could be contentious.

Not only could this league table highlight the grades of black students in comparison to white pupils – something I am nervous about as grades are not a fair representation of a student’s ability. They also represent the student experience - it could potentially re-ignite the debate started by the PM David Cameron last year when he accused Oxford University of admitting only one black person. Of course Oxford defended itself and disputed the figure as "inaccurate and highly misleading" whilst the charity Operation Black Vote stated that black students are being 'squeezed out of Oxbridge' and consequently out of elite careers like politics.

For the record, as reported in The Guardian newspaper, Oxford has accepted 32 black students for undergraduate study this academic year, the highest number in 10 years. This represents a 14% improvement on last year's admissions round, when 8.8% of black applicants were successful compared with 24.1% of white applicants, writes Jeevan Vasagar.

Black students and the class door

It seems to me that there a number of inter-related issues here, the first being the continued elitism of some of our current institutions, which clearly adversely impacts on the participation rates of black studies. However, Oxbridge, and the Russell Group, whilst being a fair target, are also an easy target.

The focus on elitism misses the wider issues of race equality which produce headline figures such as those contained within the Elevations Network report and related data from the Institute for Public Policy Research, which in 2010 found that ethnic minorities had been disproportionately affected by the recent rise in unemployment and that this pattern can be observed within the graduate market.

It’s been over ten years since the Macpherson report which put a spotlight on ‘institutional racism’ in our educational institutions and our workplaces. I wonder how much has really changed in that time.

In 2013 universities will be able to offer unlimited spaces to students who achieve ABB or better in their A Levels, down from AAB this summer.

Ministers claim more students will go to their chosen universities with an extra 35,000 students joining the pool of unrestricted students which universities can recruit from. A further 5,000 places will be allocated through a competitive core and margin to universities and colleges offering good quality and value for money.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said: "These changes will enable more high achieving students to get into their first choice university. At the same time we are also increasing the number of places on courses which offer value for money, backing those universities and colleges which have focused on keeping their costs to students down."

Universities and Science Minister David Willetts said: "A third of all students will now be free of number controls. This is what our university reforms are all about - putting choice and power in the hands of students. We are rolling back the controls on places at individual universities that have been a barrier to competition. Students will gain as universities attract them by offering a high-quality academic experience."

Nicola Dandridge, Chief Executive of Universities UK, said: “Lowering the threshold to ABB+ should mean that more students applying to go to university in 2013 are likely to secure a place at the universities of their choice. This is of course a good thing. However, it is essential that these changes are financially sustainable and do not end up reducing overall student numbers in the sector. Universities UK will be monitoring this closely.

"Universities UK has urged consistently for a period of stability in order to assess the effects of reforms taking place on student choice and on universities in 2012-13, and also the financial implications. Final details of today’s announcement must be agreed as a matter of urgency so that universities can plan for 2013-14."

Graduate Jobs From Milkround

<a10:rights type="text">© Copyright 2011-2012 Milkround</a10:rights>

New Term New Jobs!
