From the opening of the first John Lewis shop in London’s Oxford Street in 1864, the John Lewis Partnership has grown to be one of Britain’s best known and most distinctive retailers.
All 76,500 staff are partners who own the 32 John Lewis shops, 263 Waitrose supermarkets, and its online and catalogue business. Partners share in the benefits and profits of the business which had a turnover of almost £7.4 billion in 2010.
The largest John Lewis stores typically stock more than 350,000 separate lines and its latest store opened at the Olympic site in Stratford in September 2011. Other new stores are planned for Dublin, Sprucefield in Northern Ireland, Birmingham, Oxford and Leeds.
