Local government is the largest employer in the UK, with over two million staff working in the local authorities across 500 different occupational areas.

There are 433 local councils in the UK and over 11,000 town, parish and community councils. Local government in England and Wales is mainly funded by grants from central government, business rates and council tax.

The national graduate development programme (ngdp) has been a key part of local government’s annual recruitment since 2002. Commissioned, managed and delivered by local government, the ngdp combines local placements in a host local authority with an integrated national programme of learning and development.
