An Airbus Craft Apprenticeship offers you the opportunity to gain qualifications with no fees, whilst acquiring new skills through vocational training, and a regular salary.

As a Machining Craft Apprentice at Airbus you will gain a Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma (Engineering Manufacture) and a National Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering.

On completion of our 38month programme you will become a skilled machinist working on CNC machines manufacturing skin panels and stringers for various Airbus Commercial Aircraft.

Craft Apprentices on the Machining programme study at Coleg Cambria (Wrexham Campus) to achieve their qualifications, and their industry based work takes place at our world leading aircraft manufacturer site in Broughton, North Wales.

Tasks & accountabilities

Your first year on the Machining Craft Apprenticeship programme will be spent at college completing the Level 2 Foundation course; learning about engineering operations, and achieving a number of technical certificates and company required qualifications.

Our Machining Craft Apprentices then go on to join a skilled Airbus team, working within the wing production areas to allow you to gain all the relevant skills to complete your qualifications, whilst attending college on a day release programme alongside.

During your time in the Airbus factory, Machining Craft Apprentices are involved in the manufacture of wing skins, panels and stringers for various Airbus aircraft, through a variety of techniques including:

  • Following bespoke set up sheet instructions to complete a machining process
  • Use of stringer machining and long bed milling machining practices, including the loading and locating of billets, and unloading finished components
Required skills

In order to be eligible for this apprenticeship candidates must have a minimum of:

  • Six GCSEs at Grade C or 4, which must include Maths, English Language and Science (either core and additional / double award, or Physics is Science was taken as individual subjects).
  • We can consider other qualifications such as Engineering BTEC Level 2, Engineering Diploma, Principle Learning, PEO Level 2 and Pathways to Apprenticeships as two GCSEs. Alternative qualifications must be in addition to the core GCSE subjects stated above.
